”The appearing of the ’I’ to itself in the ’I am’ is thus originally a relation with its own possible disappearance” ~ Jacques Derrida [emphasis in the original, 1973] ———————————————————————— Derrida dared to investigate the concept of ’I Am’ in the same spirit that The Teachings on Emptiness does in Nagarjuna’s Mūlamadhyamakakārikā (see the chapter on ”IX - Examination of The Prior Entity”). I find this investigation very fruitful since it might help you become free of Attachments to Rigid and fixed notions on The Self and certain Cherished Teachings. I like to bring this up with people who cling to The Texts of classical Advaita Vedanta and I am always met with the same ”parroting” line of answers as seen a thousand times by almost all Spiritual Teachers. A good starter in order to move ”yourself” closer to this subject is always by investigating Memory and your ideas about Impersonal Awareness. If you come across any feeling of attachment to the idea of Brahman / Consiousness and you find yourself projecting or defending this concept in a violent manner among your friends then maybe you’d like to spend some quality time with Derrida. Now I am not saying that any concept such as Derridas critique on ”Presence” or the Advaitic notion of ”Brahman” is more true than the other. Why? Because you could use the both arguments against one-another in order to deconstruct them. What does that tell us then? That all of these ideas are not able to stand on their own - they come together in mutual dependency on one another. Emptiness is always Empty too. ———————————————————————— [further reading on Non-dual notions in Western Philosophy and Derrida can be found in ”Speech and Phenomena”, Jacques Derrida 1973]
